The project „Caricatures on Europe in Germany and Great Britain in the 1920s, 1950s and 1990s” tackles the question how ‘Europe’ was judged and satirically commented in political caricatures. The work focuses on three main aspects: Firstly, it shall be analysed how processes of developing a European consciousness and forms of European identity may be derived from caricatures and how they may be interpreted in view of different national frames. The question is secondly, whether the discussion of European topics in the caricatures fostered certain forms of visualisation of Europe: Were there any iconographical topoi and symbols arising out of the debates on Europe and did they change in the long run? Thirdly, the heights of caricatures on Europe shall be pointed out and it shall be asked why certain topics and events seem to promote the emergence of caricatures on Europe.
