Subproject A3 "Religious and Secular Representations in Early Modern Europe"
Political Culture in early modern Europe:
The concept of sacral kingship has been a classical object of historical research since the publication of Marc Blochs comparative study of English and French sacral monarchy in 1924. Many studies undertaken in this field do not focus though on the significant interdependence between sacral monarchy and religious changes during the confessional period. Did the struggle between Calvinists and catholics in early modern France lead to a secularized concept of French Monarchy? Or did it on the contrary lead to the creation of a political sphere which did not mean a disconnection between religious legitimation and monarchical representation ?
