Biography
born on 2. May 1957 in Amsterdam
1976 he attended the University of Leiden where he studied Modern History with a regional focus on Indonesia (Indonesian and Javanese languages as minor courses)
1982 scientific assistant
1987 the conferral of a doctorate was achieved with the writing of the book ‚Kraton en Kumpeni. Surakarta en Yogyakarta 1830-1870‘; (published in English in 1994)
Since 1985 research associate at the department Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia and Oceania
1993 guest lecturer at the University of Queensland, Australia
From 1996 Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy in Leiden
From 1997 to 2001 he held the chair for Southeast Asian Studies at the University Passau
since April 2001 Professor at the Humboldt-University, Berlin
